MONA (Museum of Old And New Art)
A Pivotal and Radical Art Museum Situated in Tasmania
Situated on a cliffside in Tasmania, just 11km north of the capital Hobart, MONA (Museum of New and Old Art) is an extraordinary and radical art destination.
As Australia’s largest private museum, owner and founder David Walsh’s private collection of over 1900+ works (often at times considered controversial, and estimated at $110m) presents work from Wim Delvoye, Oleg Kulik, Damien Hirst, Chris Ofili to name a few, including James Turrell’s site-specific Amarna (2015).
Designed by Melbourne-based architect Nonda Katsalidis (Fender Katsalidis Architects), MONA is an unassuming, stark and raw structure built into a rock face covering 3.5 hectares of site. The subterranean gallery space presents Ancient artefacts to contemporary works and also hosts two annual arts and music festivals; Dark Mofo in Winter and Mofo in Summer.
What makes MONA a monumental space and museum concept, is that they truly create their own rules and abide to no other for the appreciation and enjoyment of art.
