For those looking for the finest cup of coffee in Sydney, look no further. Artificer Speciality Coffee Bar & Roastery in Sydney is one of the cities best coffee establishments, located in the heart of Surry Hills. Self-proclaimed as “specialising in the procurement of delicious coffee”, at Artificer they are artisans in their own right – buying in small batches and championing each individual coffees’ unique characteristics.

Helmed by personable co-founders Dan Yee and Shoji Sasa, who have each come from a solid background in coffee respectively (Yee formerly from Salvage Speciality Coffee and Shoji Sasa from Mecca and Single Origin) have established not only a well-loved local cafe but a destination in itself, known for it’s excellent beans and knowledge of the industry. Owner Dan’s aim is to also offer a slice of “stillness” as a quiet haven for visitors outside of Sydney’s hustle and bustle, as he explains, “One thing that we like about our space, is that it’s a nice place to be still.”

With a minimalist and American oak-clad interior created by Porter & Maple, the focus is all on the coffee. It’s wide, glass windows allow a flood of light to enter the entire space, and the attention to details in the interior brass fittings and slim lighting doesn’t distract. The practicality-inspired concept took an understanding of user experience into the design, where curves and angles achieve comfortable customer navigation of the space.

Artificer’s innovative and easygoing approach to coffee also includes their environmentally-conscious reusable, dual-walled, ceramic-lined and shatterproof cups in collaboration with Melbourne-based company Sttoke, to a global network in the industry with natural alignments with Tokyo’s Onibus coffee and Kumamoto’s And Coffee Roasters. Here, you won’t find anything edible, but the coffee itself is enough to make the journey for. One of Sydney’s best gems.
