Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship
The Renowned Swiss Design University Showcases MA Works at The Mass in Tokyo
A design exhibition showcasing a collection of innovative and excellent design works, completed by the MA (Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship) students at the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne, is currently on display at The Mass gallery in Tokyo’s Harajuku.
Held over 3 rooms in the equally-striking, minimalist building designed by Japanese architect Nobuo Araki, the exhibition titled ECAL Design For Luxury & Craftsmanship presents just that; luxury product design at it’s finest. Supported by the Ambassade de Suisse au Japon and Présence Suisse, the exceptional works including contemporary glass decanters and vases, intricate music boxes, and even a set of carbon fibre knives and cutlery.
From French designer Aurélie Matthieu‘s Memphis-esque jenga vase for Baccarat, to Japanese designer Takahiro Yamamoto‘s contemporary Bento Box for Mauviel, the exhibition presents a diverse array of works displayed on wooden crates that they may have themselves been transported in. The excellent design solutions continue even throughout the space.
Key works include American Canadian designer Rodrigo Caula‘s three unique pieces including axe, knife and rope set for Vacheron Constantin titled The New Age, were developed using carbon wood and a combination of carbon fiber biaxial textiles, to alter the perception of the material as wood. Including Nigerian-American designer Ini Archibong‘s mirror, presented an excavated form with one polished, reflective side juxtaposed against a natural rock-like shape – all hand-moulded and formed in aluminium.
On view at The Mass in Tokyo, from March 24 until April 22, 2018
