SHIRAITO WATERFALL

The 'Waterfall of White Threads' With A Dramatic 70-Metre Arch

As a graceful expanse of waterfalls, witnessing Shiraito Waterfall (白糸の滝, Shiraito no Taki)is an exceptional site. Standing at only 3 meters tall, their overwhelming force is spread out over a 70 meter wide arch. Beautifully bold and consuming.

Located in Nagakura in the northern forest of central Karuizawa, Shiraito Waterfall’s surrounding mountain slopes above the waterfall and contains a volcanic stratum on which groundwater flows before surfacing. It explains why no river flows into the Shiraito Waterfall, with only the strength of the flow sourced from the volcanic groundwater.

Shiraito no Taki, meaning ‘waterfall of white threads’, aptly describes its appearance, as multiple streaks of water drape over the surface forming what seems like a white curtain. The site is most beautiful in summer when the vegetation is lush; perfect to visit all year round.
