Across a 387m2 site, Japanese leading timber furniture manufacturer KARIMOKU opens their first brick and mortar space, a diverse destination that both acts a showroom, retail and exhibition space in a 37-year-old building situated in the quiet backstreets of Tokyo’s Nishi-Azabu district. KARIMOKU COMMONS TOKYO is a destination in itself, but rewarding both for its calm locale and excellent design works found inside. Here, find a true understanding and appreciation of the stellar quality of Japan’s timber, craftsmanship and an innovative brand that is successfully striving to stand globally.
Following an unassuming sloped road from Tokyo’s bustling Aoyama and Omotesando shopping areas, find KARIMOKU COMMONS TOKYO. Inside, find the building’s 3 floors and rooftop terrace are dedicated to a complete offering of the company timber lines. Each floor presents a different atmosphere and discovery. Designed by leading Tokyo-based architect and designer Keiji Ashizawa Design, the renovated interior presents an exciting transition between spaces, with an inviting natural navigation between floors and unassuming stellar details found in timber doors, handrails and unnoticeable partitioning that open into completely new spaces. Throughout the floors, find KARIMOKU’s latest brand Mas (Japan-only), including Ishinomaki Laboratory by Karimoku, and two new sub-brands Karimoku New Standard and Karimoku Case Study that see collaborative designs with global firms Norm Architects, Moritz Schlatter, BIG-GAME and GECKELER MICHELS.
Currently, the first-floor exhibition space sees the inaugural presentation of Basketclub, an independent initiative founded during the pandemic in 2020 that saw the global design community reimagine common materials and daily functional design to a specific weekly brief. Self-initiated by Canadian designer Jamie Wolfond and Dutch designer Adrianus Kundert, the project achieved global attention and involvement, with the club’s first basket theme on display physically for the first time.
