MAREFUMI KOMURA
The Art Of Subtraction at 'Big Ship' at The Mass, Harajuku
The Mass presents the solo exhibition of Japanese artist Marefumi Komura, titled ‘Big Ship’, with paintings created through his Subtraction series, removing and reducing layers of paint to thin canvas and revealing layers underneath.
Titled ‘Big Ship’, the exhibition is a metaphor for Japan’s globalisation and a symbol of the chaotic course of the cosmos, all due to an epiphany of the artist in response to his grandmothers’ passing and an “attempt to express fragility, impermanence and imperfection.”
Resulting in an exceptional muted colour palette, the abstract explorations showcase a modest authenticity, innocently driven by their spontaneous reduction of paint layers that the artist intends to “hint at lost senses, evoking hidden landscapes, reawakening primal memories.”
