Since opening, The Standard, East Village has kept its reputation as one of New York’s most iconic yet charmingly cheeky hotels. The decor, the personalities, the dining – the overnight experience still reflects this. Looking for fun? This is the place to stay.

In the ever-evolving collage that is downtown Manhattan, The Standard, East Village still attracts creatives from all age demographics that make up the vibrant collage of personalities coming through the hotel – either staying overnight or dining. Since opening in 2011, the brand has come a long way – from founder André Balazs’ design-led hotel portfolio with that downtown attitude, to a global brand with outposts in multiple countries.

The hotel building itself is a glass monolith stitched into the fabric of its surrounding restaurants and stores, directly next to Cooper Square.

With views across Manhattan, the 21 stories enable hotel guests to play observer to the iconic cityscape of grey hues. Floor-to-ceiling windows present ideal views, with interiors refined and restrained with an edge – pops of the now-iconic ‘The Standard red’ are dotted throughout: on the stationary, bed pillows, amenities and mini bar.

The beds here are so comfortable we checked what heavenly mattress gave us the best nights sleep; and, it’s not just a mattress, but an extra topper the size of a continent that feels like sleeping on clouds. Need an incredible nights sleep? You’ll find it here on The Standard king-size beds like we did.

This is a district where art and identity are deeply entwined, and creatives are drawn to the openness of downtown where originality and eccentricity is championed and like-minded creatives can connect.

Step down into all-day street-side Café Standard on the ground floor for a hotel breakfast, where the menu has everyone covered: from NYC-style pancakes to green juices, and of course, coffee refills. A relaxed, cool café vibe starts with the staff, friendly and laidback, and with the latest The Cut (magazine) on their shelves, it’s easy to stay here all day with the café also acting as an ideal location for meetings.

There’s a quiet, calm garden tucked away at street level next to the Café Standard and NO BAR, an inclusive bar open from Tuesdays to Saturdays with curated DJs spinning the latest. For those looking to stay in shape during their stay, make sure to also utilise the complimentary guest pass to Crunch Fitness – Bowery just across the road.

Recently, the hotel hosted chef Maycoll Calderon from Mexico City’s Huset restaurant for a pop-up to celebrate The Standard, East Village 10 Year Anniversary. As Huset’s executive chef and co-owner, he oversees the farm-to-table dining and brought that ethos along with his Mexican flavours to the hotel. Calderon was once Jean-Georges’ Sous Chef, so he’s certainly one to travel for.

There are two The Standard hotel’s in New York (the other, located at the High Line), but the East Village outpost remains a classic.

Outside, the streets buzz with the energy of the city, and inside, The Standard, East Village still caters for the inquisitive, boundary-pushing travellers that are looking to socialise, network or just have an incredible nights sleep.
