MERIDIANO

A Minimalist, Axel Vervoodt-Designed Art Space Situated on the Oaxacan Coast

Meridiano is a contemporary art space located in a quiet, local strip of coastal town of Puerto Escondido, Mexico.

Small yet concise, the outdoor art space has been designed by Japanese architect Tatsuro Miki and Belgian gallerist and designer Axel Vervoordt with an unconventional concept in mind. This part of the world is wild and inspiring, and the context of the gallery informs the gallery design and concept of fostering a unique conversation between art and environment.

Lima-born, Mexico City-based artist Ximena Garrido-Lecca works at Meridiano | Photography Champ Creative©

Founded by Kasmin Gallery president Nicholas Olney and Axel Vervoodt Gallery director Boris Vervoordt, Meridiano merges architecture, art and nature, and has a focus site-specific works. Also included in its concept is cultural dialogue, formed by the varying exhibiting artist, activating the timeless art space with intention and meaning.

Meridiano is found off a sandy path on the Oaxaca coast, about a 20 minute drive from the main town in Puerto Escondido.

Here on this coastal strip, neighbouring art site and foundation Casa Wabi can also be found. The backdrop is dramatic, with Oaxaca coast’s landscape is able to shine – it’s in harsh and raw beauty.

With two main structures on the premises connected by stone pathways and coastal flora, visitors are greeted by Laura Castillo, Director of Operations since its inception. Warm and welcoming, Laura is a great part of the experience visiting Meridiano, where her knowledge of global art and culture makes conversation with her a nourishing one.

As a commercial gallery, all the commissioned works are for sale even though they have been produced as site-specific. Depending on their nature, some works are unable to be presented outside of the Oaxaca environment due to temperature or their materiality. This is really what makes Meridiano a one-of-a-kind, a very unique vision instated by its founders whom operate galleries in New York and Antwerp with their respective established galleries, Kasmin and Axel Vervoodt.

With a minimalist aesthetic and deep reverence for place, it invites contemplation and fosters a unique conversation between art and environment.
