The Okura Hotel in Tokyo’s Toranomon area, is a simply captivating space. Built in 1962 it’s an excellent example of classic 1960’s Modernist Japanese architecture and design, with involvement and direction by leading Japanese architects Yoshiro Taniguchi and Hideo Kosaka, Printmaker Shiko Munakata, ceramicist Kenkichi Tomimoto, complimented by art deco lighting and furniture. Staff in kimonos, ikebana arrangements in each lobby and even an on-site barber at hand. Although the Main South Wing was recently demolished for redevelopment in August 2015, the remaining areas manage to maintain the original atmosphere perfectly with an anticipated addition expected in late 2019 (designed by the original architects’ son, Yoshio Taniguchi).
