COMO THE TREASURY
Experience Architect Kerry Hill's Subtle Sense in this Luxury Hotel Stay in Perth
There is something quietly arresting about arriving at COMO The Treasury. In a pleasant central part of the city, the hotel sits at the heart of Perth’s Cathedral Square, within the 19th-century State Buildings — soaring arches, stately columns, a complex that has served as town hall, post office and treasury over its long civic life.
What architect Kerry Hill understood, across a meticulous three-year restoration, was how to let that confidence breathe rather than compete with it. Now with a Michelin Key, the hotel is simply, and exceptionally, what it is: a place of serenity and substance.
The 48 rooms and suites are each shaped by the building’s original bones — no two quite the same, and each one quieter than a city hotel has any right to be. Handcrafted furnishings, oversized windows and travertine stone tiles give the interiors a sense of old-world grandeur held in careful balance with the trademark COMO tranquility.
Heritage Rooms overlook Cathedral Square or Stirling Gardens, their oversized windows flooding the space with natural light. Treasury Rooms offer generous sitting areas and partial Swan River views. For those seeking something with more history encoded into the walls, the Cabinet Suite — once the State government’s actual Cabinet Room — retains its original timber panelling and dormer windows, while the Heritage Suite, formerly the Treasurer’s office, is distinguished by a striking truss ceiling. The COMO Suite, the property’s most expansive, looks out over Stirling Gardens with separate living and sitting rooms ideal for entertaining.
Throughout, bathrooms lean toward the ceremonial: heated travertine floors, freestanding bathtubs, walk-in showers, and COMO Shambhala amenities that carry the spa’s philosophy directly into the room.
That philosophy deepens below. COMO Shambhala — the name meaning “peace” in Sanskrit — occupies the reimagined vaults of the original treasury building, and the setting does something to the treatments before they even begin. The wellness centre draws on holistic approaches that combine eastern and western healing traditions, with four treatment rooms, a 20-metre heated indoor pool bathed in natural light, and a rooftop fitness centre equipped with TechnoGym. Yoga and Pilates sessions are available with expert instructors; personal trainers on request.
Above it all, fine dining restaurant Wildflower anchors the fourth floor with panoramic views across Perth and a menu that moves through the seasons of Western Australia – produce-led, specific, a genuine conversation with the state’s landscape rather than a performance of it.
Post, at ground level, brings an unhurried energy to breakfast before settling into something closer to an osteria by evening. The Cape Arid Rooms offer private dining for more intimate occasions, and the hotel’s wine and beer masterclass programme extends the story of Western Australian provenance further still.
