The Bower

Timeless Barefoot Luxury at this Iconic, Converted Motel in Byron Bay

Byron Bay is a town of contrasts: barefoot ease set amongst a set of talented, ambitious designers that are able to highlight the best of their coastal lifestyle to all of those that visit.

At the centre of it all is The Bower, a boutique hotel that has, over the last eight years, become one of the region’s most quietly elegant stays. What began as a reimagined retro drive-in motel has grown into a design destination, its atmosphere defined by monochromatic interiors, moody tonalities, and the unlikely marriage of Byron’s free-spirited soul with the industrial edge of Manhattan’s Bowery district. Opened in mid 2017, The Bower has led the case for barefoot luxury style. All natural materials reflecting both the coast and hinterland and the sustainable, unpretentious ethos of those that call Byron home.

A two-year transformation has expanded the property with a lounge, new bar and reception space, and additional suites. Conceived with a collective of Byron-based creatives, the project balances restraint and drama, extending The Bower’s original DNA while carefully refining it for the next decade.

The architectural vision was led by Studio Plenty and Tanev Muir, both known for nuanced, material-driven work. Their design language for the lounge and bar is rooted in tactility: dark tonalities layered with lighter accents, oak grains embossed into walls and joinery, lacquered finishes offset by soft furnishings. The result is a set of spaces that feel inevitable rather than imposed, where the hand of local makers is ever-present.

Byron artist Alexis Williams designed custom furniture throughout; joinery was crafted locally; and the communal spaces are punctuated by underwater works photographed on site by Francesca Owens. Owens, a former Olympic synchronised swimmer is both photographer and model in her underwater photographer. Truly unique in her work, she creates original artworks for clients in and around water. For The Bower, Owens previously photographed original works underwater in their iconic pool for the hotel rooms, now, returning to the same swimming pool for the extension to create two brand new works for the reception and lounge.

Stylist Kimberley Wiedermann layered the interiors with rich textures — oversized furniture, artisanal objects, earthy tones — all the while retaining The Bower’s minimal, monochromatic backbone. She even worked together with Owens to find the right photograph to accompany the space (opting for the subtle bubbles in the water creating textures to add to the minimal space). The daughter of an interior designer, Wiedermann has a soft, understated touch which carries through the new extension seamlessly.

The new gift store in the reception area also carries local brands such as LUV LOU handmade sunglasses, supporting local part of the hotel’s key ethos.

At the core of the hotel’s design remains Taliah Lowry, The Bower’s original designer. Her instinct-led vision has defined the property from the beginning, creating an atmosphere that combines Byron’s laidback nature with a touch of New York flavour.

Lowry’s signature work has informed the evolution taken on by current owner Josh Guok. Since taking over the reigns, Guok, together with General Manager Cath Leonard (whom has worked at The Bower since its beginnings) both carry the spirit of The Bower is at was originally envisioned.

Recently, they also introduced local brand MUKTI to its guests, by creating a bespoke wellness program for their newly built spa. Anchoring the hotel’s connection to local creatives, MUKTI are a certified organic, natural Australian skincare, hair care and body care brand for every skin type. Based nearby in Mullumbimby, their products are made in small batches and their local team of experts are – just like the brand – informed and obsessed by the natural ingredients they preach. With absolutely no toxins in their skincare, a facial at MUKTI is stress-free, guilt-free, and absolutely divine.

The Bower’s atmosphere is as much about its landscape as its interiors.

Years of foresight have allowed the gardens to mature into their prime. Palms loom high over the pool and guest rooms, creating a canopy that softens the architectural lines. From the slender Bangalow Palm to the elegant Alexander Palm, the diversity of flora is striking given the site’s compact footprint. The magnesium pool, long a defining feature of the hotel, remains its gravitational centre: crystalline, calming, wonderful both for a swim and for the slow ritual of lounging beside it beneath the palms.

And while The Bower feels like a world of its own, it is also perfectly positioned to explore Byron. The town centre is a 10–15 minute walk away, with favourite restaurants such as Bar Heather and Light Years just minutes down the road. Most convenient of all is right next door: the Byron General Store, one of the town’s original, iconic cafés. Serving brunch daily from 7am to 1:30pm, it has become a local institution for good reason. Ingredients are sourced from responsible, local suppliers; no seed oils are used (organic coconut oil only); and smoothies can be boosted with collagen or maca powder for extra nourishment. Whether it’s standout coffee, vibrant smoothies, or a classic breakfast, the menu leaves you full yet light, nourished yet energised.

This combination — retreat and connection — is what gives The Bower its character. Guests can slip easily between states of being: solitude by the pool, conversation in the bar, shared celebrations in the lounge.

An escape is indeed what The Bower has perfected. Couples retreat here for intimacy, groups gather to mark milestones, solo travellers come for the calm of the poolside. There is a room or suite type to suit any occasion. Each encounter is unique, but all are framed by the same details: palms rustling overhead, monochrome interiors softened by texture, and an atmosphere that is at once moody and serene.

In a town often defined by change, The Bower continues to evolve with intention.

Its new chapter doesn’t chase trends or bend to the moment; it deepens a narrative of elegance, restraint, and instinct-led design. In doing so, it reaffirms its place as one of Australia’s most compelling boutique hotels — and as an essential part of Byron Bay’s cultural and creative fabric.
